The revaluations led to a deficit in the balance of agricultural products in 2022, two years later, in 2020 and 2021, which recorded a surplus. The fruit and vegetable sub-category, however, remained in surplus in 2021, despite recording very significant price increases for some imports.

In total, Greece exported €9.88 billion worth of agricultural products in 2022, compared to €8.33 billion in 2021. At the same time, it imported products worth 10.21 billion euros, compared to 7.92 billion euros in 2021, bringing the agricultural trade balance to close in 2022. with a deficit of 330 million euros against a surplus of 413 million euros in 2021.

Large losses were avoided due to the positive trade balance of fruits and vegetables, since Greece not only bought imported products at a higher price, but also sold Greek products on foreign markets at a much higher price.

According to Incofruit Hellas, exports of fresh fruits and vegetables in 2022 increased in value terms by 7.6% to 1.39 billion euros, while in terms of volume they remained at the level of 2021 and amounted to 1,594,942 tons. Exports of fruits and vegetables to the 27 EU member states in 2022 reached 1.21 million tons, representing 75.8% of the total, and their value increased by 8.8% to 1.073 billion euros. Exports to third countries decreased in physical volume by 2.6%, but increased in value terms by 4.4%. The main exporting countries for Greek fruits and vegetables in 2022 were Romania, Bulgaria, Germany and Poland.

Kiwis topped the list of exported commodities, with an export value of €208.81 million in 2022. They are followed by oranges (€136.9 million), strawberries (€130.58 million), tangerines (€86.39 million) and watermelons (€72.19 million).

Imports of fresh fruits and vegetables in 2022 increased by 2.9% in volume and 15% in value compared to 2021 and amounted to 729,400 tons and 714.1 million euros, returning to the growth trend that was before 2020. Vegetables increased mainly in terms of volume and value. imports, an increase in 2022 compared to 2021 amounted to 11.3% and 29.9%, respectively. The largest increase in value was recorded in the import of potatoes by 52.9%, from 59.36 million euros in 2021 to 90.78 million euros in 2022, while the volume of imports increased at the same time by 24.7%, mainly as a result of the focus completely reopens.

In terms of fruit, bananas (€141.5m) account for the majority of imports, followed by lemons (€27.63m), avocados (€20.84m) and tomatoes (€16.37m) .
