France: New mass protests against pension reform

The fourth round of protests against pension reform ended this afternoon. Franceunions organized demonstrations in more than 200 cities involving hundreds of thousands of workers.

Police estimated that about 960,000 French people took part in the demonstrations, which were more or less peaceful, with the exception of isolated incidents in Paris, Nantes and Rennes, while organizers estimated that the number of demonstrators exceeded 2.5 million.

The fifth round is already scheduled for next Thursday and will be accompanied by strikes, while the sixth is planned for early March, when union representatives, mostly from left-wing unions, will talk about the ongoing general strikes.

Until then, consultations will continue at the parliamentary level, where both the government and the opposition consider it possible to form a majority, the first for the reform, the second against the reform.

In this case, everything depends on how the Republican deputies behave, i.ะต. centre-right who have in the past advocated reforming the country’s pension system, starting with raising the retirement age in France from 62. now he is 64 years old.

Parliamentary consultations are currently at the stage of a government-proposed merger of several insurance funds, which has been opposed by both the extreme right and the left. The parliamentary process is expected to end in early March.
