When a NASA spacecraft pointed its camera at the surface of Mars, it suddenly projected… a “bear face”.

In particular, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter camera, dubbed the High Resolution Imaging Experiment or HiRISE, took a picture of the planet’s rocks, but it went viral due to its shape.

Two cracks on the surface of Mars, two craters and a feature of the rocks were enough to form a bear’s head.

According to NASA scientists, the circular fault could have been caused by the deposition of sediment on a buried impact crater that was filled with lava or mud. The bear nose feature is likely the result of a volcanic eruption.

The University of Arizona, which developed the camera in collaboration with Ball Aerospace, shared the image on Jan. 25.

The rest of NASA’s images show the eerie beauty of winter on Mars, as the Curiosity rover spotted a flower-like rock formation last March.

The HiRISE camera has been taking pictures of Mars since 2006, when the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter began orbiting the red planet.

The powerful camera has been designed to capture detailed images of the Martian surface.

A NASA spacecraft orbits Mars every 112 minutes and helps NASA scientists study the Martian atmosphere, weather, and climate, and how they change over time.

The satellite also searches for traces of water, ice and rocks and determines future landing sites for other missions.
