
I am ready to conclude a particularly important technological agreement with the transnational company Trelleborg, which will relate to the “green transition” of shipping. EDIT AutomationGreek company that owns ECO 8 CHAPOLISa system for measuring and limiting the operating power of a ship to the maximum allowable limits, based on international rules.
As EDIT Automation CEO Markos Sigalas explains in an interview with K, the company already has five ECO 8 ShaPoLi certificates, it is the only one in Greece with such advanced certificates in a specific area and at the same time it is developing its activities in another 15 countries.
How will the SHaPoLi marine automation system contribute to the maritime community’s efforts to achieve the goal of moving towards a greener environment?
In order for shipping companies to comply with EEXI requirements, EDIT Automation has developed the ECO 8 ShaPoLi, a shaft power limitation upgrade solution that allows ships to meet the minimum level of energy efficiency to comply with international regulations. The ShaPoLi ECO8 system measures the actual power and limits it to the maximum allowable coverage limit required by the ship’s EEXI. It has been developed under the instructions of the main registrants, has been certified by Lloyds, RINA and BV and is already in the process of being approved for ABS and DNV certification. It will be the first and only navigation automation system to receive five certificates in just five months since the update of the Regulation. EDIT Automation is also the only Greek company that has been training and certifying its specialists in South Korea at the HYUNDAI shipyard since April 2022 to install a meter on the ship’s main engine shaft.
Besides ShaPoLi, does EDIT Automation develop other products or services?
EDIT Automation has produced more than 35 automation systems since 2008 for the needs of each ship. It was the first Greek company to install the system on a newly built vessel in South Korea, notably the shipping company CMM on an LPG vessel, and was the first to deploy its system to a new shipyard in 2012. Since 2017, EDIT Automation has been carrying out only certified works and inspections worldwide. It is also the only Greek company certified in Japan for 15 ppm meters, as defined by the International Shipping Regulation MEPC 107 (49), providing even innovative system-specific solutions that have been adopted by the US Navy.
Does the company plan to expand its activities outside of Greece and Cyprus?
Already EDIT Automation has its systems in more than 15 countries such as China, United Arab Emirates, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States of America, India, Singapore, etc. Until today, we have offered our services to more than 65 countries and 2500 ships, 450 shipping companies . Both our company and our specialists have more than 35 international certificates. First, we are trained and certified by international organizations and manufacturers, and then we promote their products and offer our services.
What is the scope of your partnership with Trelleborg Marine Systems UK Ltd?
Trelleborg has been producing innovative products for over 100 years in all industries, military, aviation, shipping, oil refining, etc. It is a multinational company with more than 22,000 employees worldwide and an annual turnover of over $3 billion. Although we have only been working with Trelleborg for six months, we have developed a particularly close and productive relationship, with senior management already visiting us at our offices in Kastel to discuss new proposals and opportunities for collaboration. We are already considering a new agreement, which is especially important for the shipping industry, I would say that this is one of the largest events in recent years, which will relate to shipping automation technologies for our country. After the completion of the relevant consultations, I will be able to disclose its content.
How do you achieve value for money for your systems?
On a regular basis, I would say on an annual basis, training of the company’s employees by at least three international organizations, as well as manufacturers in Greece and abroad. I would also add experience gained from tackling dozens of maritime system certification issues, as well as regular discussions with senior market leaders to resolve hundreds of issues related to maritime applications and regulations. Personally, I am a firm believer in H2H, i.e. “Human for Human” and not “Business for Business”, as this ensures the highest quality and accuracy of systems on the market. Our customers get more from us than value for money and what we call peace of mind and security.
