His auction is scheduled for January 24, 2023. Suburban West Attica Railway, the largest railway project auctioned by OSE in two decades. Two days later, the envelopes with applications will be opened.

The project will be implemented on an existing railway line and concerns the modernization of the existing railway line of the Western Attica Commuter Railway, section: Ano Liosia – Neos S.S. Megaron in P.S. Megaron (project section with option). The cost of the project is estimated at 132.61 million euros including VAT (amount excluding VAT 106.95 million euros).

The new line will start from Ano Liosia, cross Aspropyrgos and Elefsina, and end at Megara with seven new stations. The goal is to serve the ELPE Aspropyrgos and Elefsina facilities, facilitating the transition of employees to the large number of distribution, storage and transit companies headquartered west of Athens.

In particular, the project concerns the construction of a new 36 km line in the west of Athens, from Ano Liosia to Megaron railway station, serving the residential areas of Aspropyrgos, Elefsina, Loutropyrgos, as well as Neraki, Nea Peramos and Megaron. In addition, it will also serve the ELPE facilities Aspropyrgos (BEA) and Elefsina (BEE).

The following stations are planned along the railway line: ELPE Aspropyrgos, Aspropyrgos, Vamvakias, Elefsina, ELPE Elefsina, Loutropyrgos, Neas Peramos and Megara (as an option).

The final project will include electrification and signaling after connections to SKA-Kiato. At the same time, it will connect Western Attica with Athens, Athens International Airport, Piraeus and the rest of the railway network.

Throughout the entire length of the new railway line is planned with a single cross section. In particular, the section of Liosia – ELPE Aspropyrgos, the line has been studied to be able to be doubled in the future with an axle distance of 3.80 m, without this construction affecting a single existing railway line. The project also includes a study on the rehabilitation of vertical road crossings affected by the modernization of the existing railway line.

In addition, it will serve the traffic load of the ELPE facilities in Aspropyrgos and Elefsina, as well as pass passengers on the lines of the existing suburban railway network (SKA – Kiato, A. Liosion and Megaron station). ).

The total duration of the projects is set at 28 months from the date of signing the contract. In practice, if the project is approved during 2023, it could be completed in the first half of 2026. As with all railway projects, a trial run period will be required before commercial operation.

The project is financed from the Recovery Fund and is the only pure construction railway project included in the Fund.

Through this project, the Athens suburb will receive another line that will serve the western suburbs of the city, the industrial zone of Aspropyrgos-Elefsina, as well as Western Attica to Megara.

It will be the 4th suburban railway line, which is configured as follows: Chalkis-Athens, Piraeus-Kiato, Piraeus-Airport and Ano Liosia-Megara.

Project Scope

In more detail, the project concerns the reconstruction of the infrastructure of the railway line using new materials and its certification in accordance with the principles of interoperability and includes the installation of a 25 kV / 50 Hz trolley type catenary system, the installation of a signaling system with ETCS L1 with remote control and station information systems, telecommunication systems and information facilities at the stations and stops of the project (ELPE Aspropyrgos, Aspropyrgos, Elefsina, ELPE Elefsina, Loutropourgos, Nea Peramos, Megara (SGYT) and Paleos SS Megaron).

The project also includes works on the replacement of small and large line equipment, hydraulic engineering works along the entire length, repair and strengthening of line equipment, as well as work on the construction of a berth. It is noted that the project budget also includes a section of the line to the old Megaron station, the construction of which is an option activated upon agreement on the environmental conditions of the section in question.
