According to the latest analysis by the Institute for the Study of War, Iran wants to send more drones and new ballistic missile systems to Russia for use in Ukraine, likely further increasing Moscow’s dependence on Iranian-made weapons systems.
The Main Directorate of Military Intelligence (GUR) of Ukraine reported on Tuesday that Iranian officials plan to send a batch of more than 200 Shahed-136, Mohajer-6 and Arash-2 combat drones to Russia.
GUR said that Iran will send the drones to Russia in disassembled form, and Russian personnel will assemble them with Russian markings.
CNN reported Tuesday that unnamed officials in a Western country that closely monitors Iran’s weapons programs said Tehran plans to send 1,000 weapons to Russia by the end of the year, including short-range surface-to-surface ballistic missiles and drones.
This will be the first confirmed case of Iran sending advanced precision missiles to Russia.
Russia likely negotiated additional supplies of Iranian weapons systems due to the depletion of its stockpile of cruise missiles and drones during the war in Ukraine, particularly during the Russian campaign against critical Ukrainian infrastructure, ISW notes.
The GUR stated that Ukrainian air defense has shot down more than 300 Shahed-136 drones since Russia began using them in Ukraine on September 13.
Russia will likely continue to use drone strikes and missiles against critical infrastructure to try to compensate for the failures and limitations of its conventional front-line forces.
Russia’s dependence on Iranian production systems, and therefore on Iran, is likely to grow, states ISW.
