BUT Palestinian In a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank, an armed man killed one person and wounded at least three others before being shot dead by a guard, according to Israeli military officials, medical sources and a settlement official.
The Palestinian authorities in Hebron did not immediately comment.
Itamar Ben-Gvir, a far-right politician from the settlement whose Religious Zionist Party is predicted to come in third in Israel’s parliamentary elections next Tuesday, said his home in Hebron was the target of the attack.
The Israeli security forces did not confirm his claim, and the Israeli media, citing sources in the security forces, said that Ben Gvir’s house was not attacked.
“I tell these terrorists if they think that threats, assassination attempts discourage me, it will not help you. I am moving forward,” the far-right politician told the Israeli TV channel Channel 12.
Escalation of violence in the West Bank
Violence in the West Bank, between territories where Palestinians seek statehood, escalated after Israeli forces launched a crackdown in March in response to a series of attacks by Palestinians inside Israel.
A settlement spokesman said four Jews were injured in a shooting near a checkpoint in Hebron, where hundreds of settlers live among 200,000 Palestinians.
One of these victims, a middle-aged man, was later pronounced dead. It was not immediately clear whether he had Israeli citizenship.
Israeli first aid agency Magen David Adom said a Palestinian was also slightly injured in the incident.
The Palestinian Red Crescent First Aid Service reported that one of its crew members in Hebron was hit in the shoulder by Israeli fire. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the report.
