German sports equipment manufacturer Adidas announced on Tuesday that it will immediately end its partnership with Kanye West, known as “Ye” from 2021, following the American rapper’s anti-Semitic remarks in recent weeks, AFP and Agerpres reported.
“After an in-depth analysis, the company has decided to end its partnership with Ye immediately,” the German group announced in a statement.
“Adidas does not tolerate anti-Semitism or any other form of hatred,” company representatives added. The German group also announced on Tuesday that it had decided to “discontinue production” of the US rapper’s Yeezy brand.
The collaboration between Adidas and the hip-hop star from the USA has long been one of the most profitable in the fashion industry. Developed in 2014, the rapper Yeezy sneaker collection was a phenomenal success and helped Kanye West become a billionaire.
Problems between Kanye West and Adidas
The relationship between the two business partners has deteriorated significantly in recent months due to several controversial actions or statements of the American star.
Yeh was suspended from Twitter after he tweeted that he would attack Jews. Since then, the message has been removed from the social network, as it violated the rules of its work.
The rapper was also banned from Instagram. Before these reports, the rapper criticized certain commercial initiatives that Adidas would take without his consent.
In early October, the German company announced that it would review its commercial relationship with Kanye West.
Adidas recalled that it is the “sole owner of all design rights for existing products (…) within the partnership”, thus foreshadowing a possible legal battle in the future. The German group also decided to “stop all payments to Ye and his companies.”
Why Kanye Changed His Name to ‘Ye’
Last week, the Balenciaga fashion house also decided to end its collaboration with the American rapper.
Kanye West, who revealed he suffers from bipolar disorder, was already banned from Instagram for 24 hours in March in the context of his highly publicized divorce from reality star Kim Kardashian.
West officially changed his name to “E” last August.
“I think ‘you’ is the most used word in the Bible, and in the Bible it means ‘you,'” he said at the time. “So I’m you, it’s us, it’s us. He went from Kanye, which means ‘one’, to just Ye — a reflection of our goodness, our evil, our confusion, everything,” he explained.
Known for his eccentricity, he has made several controversial statements over the past two years, from his failed bid for the presidency of the United States to declaring war on the music industry to saying he would like to perform in Russia and meet Vladimir Putin.
