Netflix has added a warning to the trailer for “The Crown”, its hit TV series about the life of Queen Elizabeth II, explaining that it is a “fictional” work inspired by real events, following sharp criticism from British celebrities, AFP reported. .
“Inspired by true events, this fictional drama tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II and the political and personal events that shaped her reign,” reads the trailer for the series on YouTube and Netflix.
The platform previously resisted requests to add such a message. But criticism of the series is becoming more and more acute on the eve of the release of the fifth season, scheduled for November 9.
Former British Prime Minister John Major called the show “a load of bullshit”, while media reports say Season 5 will show Charles plotting to oust the Queen in the 1990s.
The press understands it will describe conversations in which Charles pressured John Major to force his mother to abdicate.
Actress Judi Dench, who played Queen Victoria in the films, joined critics, calling the series “cruelly unfair” to the royal family.
The Oscar-winning actress, who is close to King Charles, criticized Netflix for “blurring the line between historical accuracy and gross sensationalism”. She feared that a “significant number of viewers” might mistake the show for historical truth.
In the Daily Telegraph, William Shawcross, a biographer of the Queen Mother, described the series as “hateful”, full of “lies and half-truths”.
The new season of The Crown, one of Netflix’s biggest hits, will air as Charles, 73, makes his debut as monarch following the death of his mother, Elizabeth II, last month. He will be crowned on May 6 in London.
The fourth season has already been accused of being biased towards Charles and Diana’s relationship. It focused on Lady Di’s entrance into the royal family, played by Emma Corrin as a lonely bride, then a bride-in-distress dealing with a cold and unfaithful husband who still loves his childhood sweetheart Camilla.
But the producers have always dismissed these criticisms, insisting that the series has “always been presented as fiction based on historical events”.
