The response to the provocative statements of Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar was given by government spokesman Yannis Oikonomou, who announced “rhetorical frenzy” from Ankara.

Mr. Economou stressed that Akar’s statements are based on extremes, lies and distortions of history, international legitimacy, treaties and the reality of the Aegean.

He also sent a message to Ankara that “the repetition of a lie does not make it true,” which the entire international community has realized.

Finally, a government spokesman told R/s SKAI 100.3 that Greece is responding very effectively to Turkey’s actions, closing the door to provocations and opening windows to dialogue.

Akar attack in Greece

Let them look in the mirror. Sometimes people look in the mirror and see the truth. Or maybe they are ashamed. There can be no such duplicity, no such hypocrisy.”

The Turkish Defense Minister stated that “we are very patient. But, despite our good intentions, unfortunately, our neighbor Greece continues to escalate tension with some provocative actions and statements, and we are trying to do everything to prevent this.”

Hulusi Akar reiterated that “in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, our air forces are planning actions, both national and NATO. There is a training activity that we carry out within the framework of NATO. You are persecuting this activity, and even with the help of Russian-made S-300s you are locking them up, this is an aggressive and hostile action. This has nothing to do with good neighborly relations, allied relations and agreements. But, unfortunately, they are doing these, these hostile actions, which are unacceptable.”

However, he insisted on provocative accusations of Greece supporting terrorists. “In Lavrion, members of FETO, PKK/YPG, DAESH, DHKP-C have been hiding and are still receiving them. From there they go to different countries. There is a distribution point. And with great hypocrisy and duplicity, they claim that this is not happening,” he stressed.

Continuing his attacks on Greece, he said that “in Thrace we have our compatriots. They do not accept the existence of our brothers there. They say: “They are Muslims.” So are they Chinese or Japanese? Their names are Turkish, their addresses are Turkish, their cemeteries are Turkish, their dates and titles are Turkish, their relatives are here. They violate the rights and laws of our brothers in Western Thrace and ignore it.”

The Turkish Defense Minister accused Greece of militarizing the islands. “The islands have been handed over, but there are some regimes regarding the islands that must be demilitarized. And yet they militarize them. The strangest thing in the world is happening. As territorial waters are, so should airspace be. But they say no and claim that their territorial waters are 6 miles and their airspace 10 miles. This is incomprehensible, and not a single sane person would agree with this,” he said.
