Ecuador faces expulsion from the World Cup in Qatar
According to the Daily Mail, the player Byron Castillo allegedly used forged documents, and this could lead to the exclusion of the Ecuador national team from the final tournament in Qatar.
Castillo, who played eight qualifiers, is actually Colombian and was born in 1995, not 1998 as claimed.
According to the quoted source, the footballer admits on the recording that he used a fake passport, and the Ecuadorian federation allegedly covered up this violation.
FIFA’s appeals committee will meet on Thursday to see what decision should be made in the case.
FIFA opened a disciplinary case in this case on May 10 this year.
Ecuador directly qualified for the World Cup along with Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.
The Chilean federation (the team that missed out on qualifying for the World Cup) said there was “overwhelming evidence that the player was born in Colombia,” according to News.ro.
At this year’s final tournament, Ecuador was drawn in Group A along with Qatar (the host country), Senegal and the Netherlands.
