EU official: Von der Leyen to outline plan to cap energy prices on September 14

Chairman of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyenlay out a plan to cap prices energy September 14, according to the official EUROPE.

“Ms von der Leyen, our president, will elaborate on this on September 14,” Mechtild Wörsdörfer, deputy director general of the European Commission’s energy department, told the European Parliament’s energy committee, Reuters reported.

Greek proposal to EU energy ministers

Greece’s energy market proposals were communicated to its European counterparts by the Environment and Energy Minister ahead of an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Energy Ministers on 9 September. As he announced in a tweet, in a letter he sent to them, he presents a mechanism for recovering excess revenues from electricity companies, the money we received in the first 55 days of its implementation, and the Greek proposal for a permanent European mechanism that separates natural gas prices from electricity prices.

Greece’s proposals, according to Mr. Skrekas, are included in the letter of the Gas Commission Coordinating Group, which includes regulators from all EU countries. The letter mentions both a proposal to cut electricity off the price of natural gas and a temporary mechanism to take the generating company’s windfall profits. According to the Minister, the letter from the Gas Coordinating Group refers to the Iberian Peninsula implemented by Spain and Portugal as “Model III” and asks Member States to decide which one is most suitable for centralized implementation in Europe.

The first picture of the climate that is being formed within Europe, taking into account the Extraordinary Council of Ministers, will be available two days before, at a working meeting to be held in Brussels at the level of technical specialists and experts from all member countries. There is no doubt that Europe will move within the framework of the proposals that have been made for several months by the countries of the South, including Greece.

However, Mr. Skrekas, in his statements yesterday, also mentioned the need to save energy. He spoke about the already announced measures to reduce consumption in the state, as well as a savings campaign for households in the next period, which, according to him, have already begun to limit their consumption.

Tanks fill up, gas prices fall

The atmosphere in Europe is changing as its attempts to phase out Russian gas appear to be bearing fruit and fuel prices begin to fall. Some European officials are even more confident about the tug-of-war with Moscow.

Although Gazprom closed Nord Stream 1 again yesterday for three days, natural gas futures for October delivery fell 9.6%. The decisive factor is the success of the EU. and specific member countries that filled their tanks with fuel, reaching 85% ahead of schedule. As Wei Xiong, an analyst at Rystad Energy, points out, “The fact that the reservoirs were filled, and even earlier than planned, certainly reduces anxiety, even if there is uncertainty about energy supplies in the winter.”
