Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed Thursday that its forces struck a train at Chaplyne station in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region, in an attack that Kyiv said killed 25 civilians and injured more than 30, including children.
The Russian Ministry of Defense said at a daily briefing on Thursday that it was a military train that was supposed to deliver weapons to the front line in eastern Donbas, Reuters reports.
In the pictures published by the Ukrainians on Wednesday, several passenger cars can be seen burning. They also don’t seem to have had any of the secondary explosions that would have occurred if they were carrying ammunition.
The Russians destroyed 276 of the (maximum) 165 Ukrainian aircraft
In a statement on Thursday, Moscow said it had destroyed eight Ukrainian fighter jets during strikes on air bases in Ukraine’s Poltava and Dnipropetrovsk regions. It would be one of the heaviest losses of the Ukrainian Air Force in recent weeks, Reuters notes.
To be clear, however, the Russians claim that a total of 276 Ukrainian aircraft have been shot down so far, while the number of Ukrainian combat aircraft before the start of the war was a maximum of 165.
It should also be said that Ukrainian aviation continues to be active, and a significant part of the country’s airspace continues to be contested by military aircraft of two warring parties.
