Ukraine: 458 people died in Bucha during Russian occupation

During the Russian occupation of the city of Bucha near Kyiv, 458 civilians were killed, of which 419 were executed or died from torture, Deputy Mayor of Bucha Mikhailina Skorik-Skarovskaya said at a press conference.

“On the territory of the Butsa community, we have found and identified 458 corpses of people who died during the Russian military invasion. Of these, 419 were killed by Russian soldiers. Among the dead were 12 children under the age of 21,” the Vice Mayor said.

Among the dead were 366 men and 86 women.

According to Skarovskaya, most of them were shot in their cars while trying to leave the city, 116 bodies were found in a mass grave near the Church of St. Andrew the First-Called and All Saints.

Also, more than 50 bodies were not buried, and they are still in morgues, she said, adding that five of them could not be identified, because experts could not determine the sex in these cases.

Among the dead are many elderly people who, while alive, “were too weak, sick and unable to move to leave their homes,” said a priest who helped bury residents in a mass grave near the church.

Skarovskaya added that 14 residents were captured, and 10 are considered missing.

At the end of July, police in the Kyiv region reported that the bodies of 1,448 civilians had been found in the region since the start of the war, of which 216 were still unidentified.

Andrey Nebitov, the director of the Kyiv region police, said that at the moment 300 people are considered missing during the hostilities.

Russian troops were in the city of Bucha for more than a month. After their retreat at the end of March, local authorities and journalists found dozens of corpses and mass graves in the city. Satellite photographs show that the corpses on the streets of the city existed during the Russian occupation. Russia denies the involvement of the Russian military in the killings of civilians, calling the revelations “a provocation and staging.”
