After the scandal with the Russians intercepting the conversations of German officers about the potential use of long-range Taurus missiles in Berlin, another leak of information occurred, this time regarding the secret technical details of these powerful missiles, EFE and Agerpres report.
According to the Suddeutsche Zeitung, at Monday’s meeting of the Defense Committee of the Bundestag (the lower house of the German parliament), dedicated to the mentioned security incident, in the secret part of the meeting, the chief of staff of the army, Carsten Breuer, explained to the deputies the technical and operational procedures for setting the targets and routes of the Taurus missiles.
Detailed information on this topic apparently reached the T-Online portal, which wrote that Lieutenant General Breuer explained that in order to program German missiles with a range of 500 kilometers – enough to destroy the Kerch bridge from the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, it is illegal annexed by Moscow in 2014, or even to reach the Moscow region – special technology is required.
Germany’s defense capability may be weakened
Important and complex data, such as elevation measurement points, vector data, satellite images and raster maps, must be processed by special technical systems, of which Germany would have a very limited number, according to the leaked information.
If these systems were delivered to Ukraine, they would be inaccessible to the German military, according to information leaked to T-Online, and therefore Germany’s defense capabilities could be weakened.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz insisted that in order to control the Taurus missile targets, the German military would have to participate in their launch, which could be interpreted by Russia as direct or indirect German involvement in the war in Ukraine.
Accusations of the opposition in Germany
But Scholz “forgot” to publicly mention this “detail” of special terminals, EFE notes.
The opposition accused him of not trusting the Ukrainians and argued that Germany could easily train Ukrainian troops to use these missiles.
Military expert Ralf Thiele, a former colonel in the German army, insisted that Scholz did not use this argument publicly because all this information about data, special terminals and their limited availability is classified, so if it became known, it would weaken Germany’s defenses . .
In addition, if Germany delivered Taurus missiles to Ukraine together with special terminals, they could fall into the hands of the Russians on the battlefield.
Measures announced after new leak
The head of the Defense Committee, the liberal Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, who is a supporter of the idea that Germany should supply Ukraine with Taurus missiles, has already announced measures in connection with the disclosure of classified data.
She told the Suddeutsche Zeitung that the president of the Bundestag, Barbel Bas, would be informed and then “the federal police or prosecutors would intervene.”
In her account on the platform X, the German politician insisted that the disclosure of information from a secret meeting of the parliamentary committee “is not a small thing”.
“The complaint has been filed. Anyone who discloses secrets to impose their own agenda does not deserve a seat in parliament,” she warned, referring to the fact that the filtering of this information somehow justifies Scholz’s refusal to send Taurus missiles to Ukraine.
