The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, warned on Thursday during a visit to Washington that the outcome of the war in Ukraine could be decided in the coming months, urging Western allies to step up aid to Kyiv, AFP and Agerpres reported.

“The next few months will be decisive,” he said, adding that “many observers expect a Russian offensive this summer, and Ukraine cannot wait for the results of the next American election.”

“Everything that needs to be done needs to be done quickly,” he urged from the US capital, where he was heading after a visit to the UN Security Council in New York.

In Washington, Josep Borrell debated, among others, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and insisted on the tragic consequences of a potential Russian victory.

Putin will install a “puppet government” in Kyiv if he wins the war

If Vladimir Putin “wins this war, conquers Ukraine and establishes a puppet regime in Kyiv, similar to the one we already see in Belarus, it will not stop there,” he warned.

“This will have enormous consequences for the United States and for the alliance systems built around the United States and Europe,” he also said.

The European foreign minister also held talks with House Republican Don Bacon, a senior European official said.

Among other things, Josep Borrell asked him to imagine “Russian tanks in Kyiv” and deliver his message to a seminar of Republican elected officials in West Virginia.

A new $60 billion aid package for Kyiv has been requested for months by the Joe Biden administration, but is still blocked in Congress. Its passage has been held up by the goodwill of Donald Trump’s supporters in the House of Representatives, who refuse to consider the text in its current form because of the immigration dispute.

“This is not a game without consequences. In a few months, Ukraine may find itself in an unbearable situation,” the European official emphasized. “Republicans should think about it,” he added.
