On Sunday, a Russian air defense system shot down two Ukrainian drones in Russia’s Novgorod region, about 850 kilometers north of the Russia-Ukraine border, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
According to this ministry, the attack took place around 15:30 Moscow time (12:30 GMT).
During this time, the Russian aviation authority announced the restriction of work at the Pulkovo airport in St. Petersburg to ensure the safety of civil flights, without providing any other explanation, according to the EFE news agency, quoted by Agerpres.
Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that two people were injured as a result of a fire a few kilometers from the airport.
Whether there is a connection between this fire and the downed Ukrainian drones over the Novgorod region, located south of St. Petersburg, is unclear.
Ukraine is increasingly resorting to such asymmetric warfare tactics to compensate for its inferiority at the front and shortage of ammunition. Thus, Ukrainian drones are launched not only to destroy purely military targets, but also against civilian objects of military or logistical importance for the Russian army, even on the territory of Russia, such as fuel tanks, metallurgical plants or elements of railway infrastructure.
The Ukrainian army has developed several types of drones for such attacks, according to Kyiv, some of them have a range of about 1,000 kilometers, and Sunday’s attack is proof of that.
British Defense Minister Grant Shapps announced on Thursday in Kyiv that Great Britain will deliver more than 10,000 drones, including attack drones, to the Ukrainian military this year. In addition, last month the British government announced cooperation with Latvia to organize a coalition for the production and delivery of drones to Ukraine “on a large scale and at affordable prices.”
Russia is also increasingly relying on drones in its war with Ukraine, both for front-line and long-range attacks, developing several new types of drones as well as using advanced electronic warfare to neutralize drones launched by the Ukrainian military.
