Ukraine’s armed forces will soon stabilize the situation on the battlefield and plan to form units for counteroffensive operations later this year, a military commander said on Wednesday, Reuters reports.

Ukrainian forces suffered a setback after nine months of a largely stable frontline when the eastern city of Avdiyivka fell to Russia in early February after months of devastating attacks.

Ukrainian troops have been forced to leave several settlements near the city due to the Russian offensive, which continues due to depleted ammunition reserves. Meanwhile, a vital US aid package has been blocked by Republicans in Congress.

“We will stabilize the situation in the near future,” said Oleksandr Pavlyuk, who was appointed commander of the Ground Forces during the recent personnel reshuffle, “and will do everything possible to prepare the troops for more active actions and initiatives.”

He added that the current work is aimed at withdrawing military units that have lost their potential and restoring them to further build forces for counteroffensive actions this year.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that Russia will try to prepare a new offensive this spring or summer, but Kyiv has its own battle plan.
