Russian journalist and blogger Roman Ivanov was sentenced to seven years in prison on Wednesday for publishing messages on social networks criticizing the invasion of Ukraine, which is a new example of Russia’s repression, reports AFP.

A court in Korolev, a small town six kilometers northeast of Moscow, found 51-year-old Roman Ivanov guilty of “spreading false information” about the Russian military in three messages posted on the Russian social network VKontakte and Telegram.

One of the messages referred to the events in the Ukrainian city of Bucha, where in April 2022 the bodies of civilians were discovered. Kyiv blamed these mass killings on the Russian military, which Moscow has always denied.

Immediately after the verdict was announced, his supporters chanted in the corridors of the court: “Roma (abbreviated from Roman), we are with you. You are not alone,” said an AFP journalist at the scene.

His mother, Alla Ivanova, who gave an interview to the press, quickly condemned the “fabricated” accusation. “He fought for people, helped them,” she said.
