Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, threatened to use nuclear weapons against the United States, Great Britain, Germany and Ukraine if Moscow loses all occupied Ukrainian territories, reports Independent Kyiv.
Medvedev, who is also a former president of Russia, has repeatedly threatened to use nuclear weapons. His critics say his statements are a bluff for intimidation, not real Russian plans, and are intended to scare the West into making concessions.
- “Attempts to restore Russia’s borders since 1991 will lead to only one thing – a global war with Western countries using our entire strategic (nuclear) arsenal against Kyiv, Berlin, London and Washington. And against all other beautiful historical sites that have long been included among the targets of our nuclear triad,” Medvedev said, referring to the triad of intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched ballistic missiles and nuclear strategic bombers.
Medvedev said that Russia’s potential defeat in the war against Ukraine and the “disintegration of the country” could trigger a nuclear war.
Medvedev, a close ally of Putin, regularly threatened Ukraine and NATO with nuclear attack.
In February 2023, according to the ex-president of Russia, the continuation of arms supplies to Kyiv risks leading to a global nuclear catastrophe.
In July 2023, Dmitry Medvedev said Moscow would have to use nuclear weapons if Kyiv’s ongoing counteroffensive was successful.
