Russia may have spent $211 billion to equip, deploy and maintain its troops for operations in Ukraine, and Moscow lost more than $10 billion by canceling or delaying arms sales, a senior U.S. defense official said on Friday, Reuters reported.

The costs of Russia’s nearly two-year incursion are being detailed as President Joe Biden’s administration tries to convince the US House of Representatives to approve a $95 billion international security aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

“You’ve heard us talk a lot about how important it is for the US Congress to pass additional funding so that we can continue to support Ukraine,” the official told reporters.

“But I don’t think we talked so much about the costs that Russia has already incurred and continues to incur,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

About 315,000 Russian troops were either killed or wounded, the official added.

Since February 2022, Ukraine has destroyed or damaged at least 20 medium and large Russian naval ships and one Russian-flagged oil tanker in the Black Sea, the official said.
