Moscow said on Saturday it had repelled an attack by Ukrainian drones on Russian “civilian transport vessels” without damage on Friday night in the southwestern Black Sea, an important raw material export route for both countries, Reuters reported.
In a statement published on the Telegram messaging app, Russia’s Defense Ministry said Ukraine carried out a “terrorist attack on Russian civilian transport vessels using semi-submersible maritime drones in the southwestern part of the Black Sea.”
The ministry headed by Serhii Shoigu added that one Ukrainian Navy drone that took part in the attack was destroyed by artillery fire, and the rest were disabled by means of electronic warfare.
He added that no Russian civilian or military vessels were injured.
Reuters says it was unable to verify the Russian version, and there has been no immediate response from Ukraine.
The Black Sea is a vital route for Russian and Ukrainian grain and oil exports.
Last July, Russia refused to extend an agreement brokered by Turkey that provided for safe grain exports through the region.
It is not known where the attack took place on Friday.
The southwestern part of the Black Sea is washed by the Bosphorus Strait in Turkey.
Ukraine has launched a series of drone and missile attacks on Russian military targets in the Black Sea in recent months, sinking at least one warship and damaging others.
