Swedish prosecutors announced on Wednesday that they were closing their investigation into the September 2022 explosions that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea, and which remain the most mysterious international incident since the start of the war in Ukraine, Reuters reported.
The conclusion of the prosecutor who led the case, Mats Ljungqvist, is that Stockholm has the competence to shed light on the case, as investigators have established that no Swedish nationals were involved in the act and that the explosions did not take place on Swedish soil, Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter reported. with reference to the statement of the prosecutor’s office published on Wednesday morning.
According to Swedish prosecutors, the conclusion is based, among other things, on the analysis of a large number of ship movements, a thorough investigation of the place where the explosions took place and interviews of people who can solve the case.
“In the context of the current situation, we can state that there is no Swedish jurisdiction,” prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist said in a statement, adding that the prosecution would not provide more details about the case.
The investigation carried out by Stockholm was carried out in the framework of international cooperation with several countries, especially Denmark and Germany, and the results of the Swedish investigation were transferred to the German side, the quoted source said.
“The preliminary investigation in Germany is ongoing, and due to the secrecy that prevails in international legal cooperation, I cannot comment further on the cooperation that took place,” Ljungqvist also said in a press release.
The prosecutor who handled the case confirmed on Monday that he would publicly announce the decision on the progress of the investigation, given that the information first appeared in sources in the Swedish press.
The Kremlin ridicules Sweden’s decision to investigate the explosions under the Baltic Sea
Asked about it during a daily press conference on Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmytro Peskov called Sweden’s decision to drop the investigation “remarkable” because of the inability to identify the perpetrators and what he called the transfer of “relevant materials” to Germany, according to TASS.
“Germany is a country that has lost a very important asset. There were German companies involved in a joint venture that was the operator of those pipelines that were blown up in this terrorist sabotage of critical infrastructure,” he said.
Dmytro Peskov also said that Russia will continue to monitor the investigations conducted in the West into the causes of the explosions, and recalled that Moscow was refused when it repeatedly requested to participate in the investigation under international auspices. He also said that Sweden did not share the results of its investigation with Russia.
The Kremlin spokesman also noted that Germany is now responsible for continuing the investigation and finding those responsible for the sabotage that led to the cessation of Russian natural gas supplies to Western Europe.
There are no official explanations for the explosions that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines
The explosions on the Nord Stream gas pipelines remain one of the biggest mysteries since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, several independent media investigations have come to different conclusions.
Most recently, the American newspaper The Washington Post wrote last November, citing anonymous sources who, according to it, were familiar with the matter, that the order for sabotage was given by a Ukrainian colonel with the approval of General Valery Zaluzhny, the commander-in-chief of the Kyiv forces.
However, a large-scale investigation by journalists from all Scandinavian broadcasters has shown that last spring’s Nord Stream gas pipeline explosions may be linked to a “ghost fleet” that Russia is deploying in the North Sea.
Russia has accused Britain, the United States and Ukraine, in turn, of orchestrating the bombings and complained that it was not invited to an international investigation into their cause.
