The European Union is preparing to introduce a new package of sanctions against Russia on the two-year anniversary of the Russian invasion that started the war in Ukraine, dpa reported on Monday.

According to some data obtained by the cited agency, the sanctions will be significantly expanded, including more than 200 individuals and organizations whose assets in the EU will be blocked. At the same time, several companies that contribute to the military-technological development of Russia or the strengthening of the country’s defense and security capabilities will be under attack.

The Union will no longer be able to sell products and technologies related to military ties with Russia.

Recently, Brussels used such tactics against companies from China, Uzbekistan, Iran or the United Arab Emirates, accused of involvement in circumventing European sanctions.

Specific proposals for a new package of sanctions – so far the 13th since February 2022, when Russia attacked Ukraine – were presented to the EU countries by senior officials of the European Commission at the end of last week, dpa notes.

The next step is the preparation of a resolution on sanctions, which must then be officially approved by the 27 countries of the Union.

The previous package included a ban on the import of diamonds and jewelry from Russia. For some time, there has been a broad ban on the import of Russian oil, coal, gold and luxury goods, as well as a series of measures against Russian banks and financial institutions.

According to dpa, along with the sanctions, a decision may be made on another measure that has already been taken into account: the confiscation of income from frozen assets of the Central Bank of Russia. (Agerpress)
