The UN’s top court said on Friday it has jurisdiction to rule on most aspects of a case brought by Ukraine over Russia’s 2022 invasion, in which Kyiv is seeking compensation.

Ukraine brought the case to the UN International Court of Justice (ICJ), also known as the World Court, days after Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

Although the case revolves around the 1948 Genocide Convention, Kyiv does not accuse Moscow of committing genocide in Ukraine. Instead, they say that Russia violated the genocide agreement, justifying the invasion by saying that it was necessary to stop the alleged genocide of Russian speakers in eastern Ukraine.

Last September, Moscow lawyers argued that the judges of the International Court of Justice do not have jurisdiction, as the Ukrainian case does not fall under the scope of the Genocide Convention.
