Coordinated raids in five countries led to the arrest of three people suspected of transporting goods to Russia that could be used for military purposes, the European judicial agency Eurojust announced on Tuesday, citing AFP.

Authorities in Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Canada and the Netherlands have launched a joint investigation into the export of technological and laboratory equipment in violation of European Union sanctions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Late last year, Dutch police launched an investigation that uncovered “a network of companies that were used to circumvent the ban on exports to Russia,” Eurojust reported.

The Dutch Fiscal Intelligence and Investigation Service (FIOD) said two men, aged 56 and 57, were arrested on suspicion of being directors of a Dutch company that ships goods to Russia via Eastern Europe.

A 54-year-old woman was also detained on suspicion of involvement in the operation. Dutch public broadcaster NOS said the contraband was worth hundreds of thousands of euros.

The European Union has already imposed an unprecedented 12 rounds of sanctions against Russia since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

An EU official said last week that Brussels was considering introducing a new round of sanctions against Russia next month.
