The mayor of the southern Russian city of Voronezh declared a state of emergency on Tuesday after what officials said was a drone attack by Ukraine that damaged several buildings and injured a child.
People in one block were evacuated to a nearby school after the wreckage of the drone caused a small fire and broke windows, Mayor Vadym Kstenin said on the Telegram channel.
Windows in other buildings were also broken, he said, adding: “The city’s state of emergency … will allow for quick action to replace them.”
The governor of the region, Oleksandr Gusev, reported on his Telegram channel that a girl was injured as a result of a drone debris falling on the house where she lived.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said it shot down five drones and intercepted three more overnight over the Voronezh region, which borders Ukraine. The administrative center of the region is the city of Voronezh.
The ministry also said it had intercepted four drones in the neighboring Russian region of Belgorod.
Voronezh, a city with a population of over 1 million, is located approximately 250 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.
In recent months, Kyiv has stepped up its airstrikes, which it says are strikes against Russian military infrastructure to undermine Moscow’s military efforts.
Russia has an air base near the city of Voronezh, where several Su-34 bombers are based, Russian media reported.
During airstrikes in Ukraine, Moscow often uses fighter-bombers.
Russian news outlet Shot reported on Telegram that at least 15 explosions were heard near the airbase and that drone debris fell on a block nearby.
Reuters says it could not independently verify this information.
