The Kremlin on Thursday accused the United States of trying to pressure European countries to support the confiscation of frozen Russian assets that Russians say are illegal to help fund Ukraine’s recovery, the RIA news agency reported, Reuters reported.

Kremlin spokesman Dmytro Peskov reacted to the reports of the American media that the Biden administration in principle supported the bill proposed by the United States to facilitate such seizure.

Peskov said that Moscow had not been informed of the development and that news of such a move looked like a provocative attempt to pressure European countries, where he said the main Russian assets are located, to sign the asset freeze.

Bloomberg wrote that the administration of President Joe Biden supported a bill that would allow the seizure of some of the frozen Russian assets worth $300 billion.

“The draft law will provide the necessary powers to the executive branch to confiscate Russian sovereign assets for the benefit of Ukraine,” the National Security Council’s memorandum to the Senate Committee on International Affairs states.
