On December 24, Polish farmers suspended the blockade in front of the Medica checkpoint, a protest aimed at obtaining government subsidies for corn and preventing tax increases.

At the same time, Polish truck carriers, who condemn the “unfair competition” of their Ukrainian colleagues, have been blocking several checkpoints on the border with Ukraine since the beginning of November. Polish motor carriers are demanding that the European Union re-introduce a system that forces Ukrainian companies to obtain a license to operate in the EU. The same system will apply to European truck carriers wishing to enter Ukraine.

“We have not received a written confirmation that our demands will be met, so we will continue our protest,” said Roman Kondrov, the leader of the farmers’ demonstration in Medyka.

Although Polish Agriculture Minister Czeslaw Siekerski sent a note telling farmers that their requests would be met, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has yet to come with a signed statement, Kondrow said. He added that Polish farmers will pass one truck through the checkpoint in Medica every hour.

Poland’s new prime minister, Donald Tusk, promised in December that he would find a solution to end protests by disgruntled carriers in his country.
