Imprisoned Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny has been transferred to a correctional facility in the Arctic region of northern Russia, his spokeswoman said on Monday, after supporters lost contact with him for more than two weeks, Reuters reported.
Navalny was in the IK-3 correctional facility in Harpi, Yamalo-Nenets region, about 1,900 km northeast of Moscow, spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh said.
Navalny’s lawyer was able to see him on Monday, Yarmysh said.
Navalny’s associates, who were preparing for his transfer to a “special regime” colony, the strictest level in the Russian penitentiary system, said he had not been seen by lawyers since December 6 and raised the alarm about his fate.
“Many thanks to our supporters, activists, journalists and mass media, who worry about the fate of Oleksii and do not tire of writing about this situation,” said Navalny’s lawyer Ivan Zhdanov.
Zhdanov said that his supporters sent 618 requests for information on the whereabouts of Navalny, who is being held in a correctional facility 235 km east of Moscow.
