The German government will not force Ukrainian refugees to return home for mobilization on the condition that Kyiv wants to supplement its troops, German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann told the DPA agency, as quoted by Agerpres.
“There is no question of forcing people to do compulsory military service or to do military service against their will,” Buschmann told DPA, adding that it was good that refugees from Ukraine were accepted in Germany through a simple procedure and were provided with considering the opportunity to work.
“At the end of the day, our goal is to have more people in Ukraine working and fewer people living on welfare,” he said amid ongoing debate in Ukraine about how the army can mobilize more soldiers.
The military command in Kyiv wants to mobilize another 450 to 500 thousand soldiers. The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine appealed to Ukrainian men living abroad to return home and defend their country from the Russian invasion, almost two years after the conflict began.
Discussions regarding further mobilization in Ukraine
Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said it was an “invitation”, but suggested that there would be sanctions against those who did not comply. “We are still discussing what will happen if they don’t come voluntarily,” he told Die Welt, Bild and Politico.
But a ministry spokesman later denied that coercive measures had been discussed. “There is no discussion of a call from abroad on the agenda,” said Hilarion Pavlyuk, quoted by the Ukrainian press.
“If citizens of Ukraine want to enlist (in the army), they come (voluntarily) to Ukraine to enlist,” he said.
Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians are registered as refugees from the war in Germany and other countries. Officially eligible men between the ages of 18 and 60 are not allowed to leave the country, but many have managed to do so.
“I cannot imagine that – in the context in which our Constitution provides that no German citizen should do military service against his will – we can force people from other countries to do this,” German Minister Buschmann also said in an interview. to the DPA agency.
