The European Union will organize an extraordinary summit to agree on a review of its multi-year budget, including funds for Ukraine, only from February 1, European Council President Charles Michel said on Monday, as quoted by Reuters and Agerpres. .
EU leaders last week agreed to start accession talks with Ukraine, but failed to agree on a €50 billion financial package for Kyiv over a vote by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
“I understood on Thursday and Friday that a little more time is needed with Hungary in order to reach the unanimous decision that is necessary for the agreement on the revision of the Multiannual Financial Framework,” Michel said at a press conference together with the Belgian Premier minister Oleksandr De Croo, clarifying that the negotiations will be resumed on February 1 next year.
From January 1, Belgium will take over the six-month presidency of the EU Council from Spain.
The news of the resumption of negotiations between the member states with Hungary on the unblocking of military and other aid only after almost a month and a half, will certainly be a disappointment for Kyiv, which is preparing for another winter under the auspices of Russian drones and missile strikes on its energy infrastructure.
The White House’s aid package for Ukraine and Israel also ran into opposition from Republican lawmakers in Congress, remaining deadlocked amid political negotiations on Capitol Hill.
