Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is a “Trojan horse” who is breaking European unity and protecting Russia’s interests, Czech European Affairs Minister Martin Dvořák said on Sunday, as quoted by Euractiv.
“Today, Orbán is a Trojan horse that is intensively and, unfortunately, increasingly effective in breaking this unity. [europeană] and trying to show that they should ignore Ukraine,” the Czech minister said Sunday during a debate broadcast live on CNN Prime News.
His comments came just two days after Viktor Orbán used Hungary’s veto power to block the European Commission’s proposed multi-year aid package of 50 billion euros to help Ukraine repel the Russian invasion.
A day ago, he abstained during the vote in the European Council regarding the start of negotiations on the accession of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova to the EU, leaving the room during the vote of the leaders of the member states of the community bloc on this issue.
However, Orbán assured on Friday that “there should be no doubt” that Hungary could still stop the two countries from joining the EU in the future.
The Hungarian leader also demanded that the EU, before considering a possible refusal to veto new aid to Ukraine, unblock “all European funds” for his country.
Viktor Orban, accused of protecting the national interests of Russia
Pending a vote in the European Council, the commission led by Ursula von der Leyen last Wednesday unblocked 10.2 billion euros in European funds for Hungary, an amount that had been frozen due to fears of an erosion of the rule of law in Budapest.
However, another €21 billion is still blocked.
Commenting on this situation, Czech Minister for European Affairs Martin Dvořák said at the end of last week that Viktor Orbán is practicing some form of blackmail against the EU bloc.
“I think the real word for [abordarea Ungariei] this is blackmail. I think the real word is the abuse of the veto right not to protect the national interests of Hungary, but to protect the interests of Russia.”
Although Budapest’s stance since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has caused a rift between it and its Visegrad partners, harsh comments such as those made by Dvořák remain rare in the grouping of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.
