Details of what they discussed were not available. Ukrainian media speculated that they may meet in Buenos Aires to resolve differences over Kyiv’s bid to join the European Union.

The two leaders spoke for about 20 seconds surrounded by other guests in Argentina’s parliament ahead of next week’s European Union summit.

At the summit, they should decide whether to start accession negotiations with Ukraine. Orbán has repeatedly stated that he is against starting negotiations now. Any decision to continue must be unanimous.

Orban has also threatened to block moves to give Kyiv 50 billion euros in budget support until 2027, although a senior official said on Friday that the EU would find ways to financially support Ukraine even if Hungary rejects the initiative.
