The West’s new promises of aid to Ukraine are the lowest since the start of the Russian invasion, the Kiel Institute said on Thursday, as quoted by AFP.
A German think tank, which looked at military, financial and humanitarian aid promised and provided to Ukraine, found that Western support has declined in the context of political divisions in Europe and the United States, with future commitments at an all-time low. in the August-October period: a decrease of 87% compared to the same period in 2022, at the level of 2.11 billion euros.
In total, since last February, when Russia launched its war of aggression, Ukraine’s allies and major international financial organizations such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have pledged nearly €255 billion in aid, of which €182 billion is short-term. , have already been delivered or are scheduled to be delivered by the end of this year. The commitments consist of 141 billion euros in financial aid, 16 billion in humanitarian aid and 98 billion in military aid.
In August-October, the overall figure was the lowest, and of the 42 donor countries tracked by the Kiel Institute, only 20% pledged new packages, and commitments from the European Union and the United States were “limited.”
The institute assesses the prospects as “uncertain”, since the largest amount that should come from the EU has not been approved, and American aid is decreasing.
“Ukraine can only hope that the EU will finally accept the long-announced support plan in the amount of 50 billion euros. A further delay will clearly strengthen the position of (Russian President Vladimir) Putin,” warns Christoph Trebesh, head of the Kiel Institute group that monitors the situation with aid to Ukraine.
The EU’s decision is hindered by the reluctance of some countries to allocate larger amounts, as well as the new American package blocked in Congress by Republicans. (Agerpress)
