The Security Service of Ukraine announced on Monday that it had detained a man from Kyiv who allegedly helped Moscow organize a Russian missile attack on the capital on December 31, 2022, The Kyiv Independent reports.

The 40-year-old suspect left for Russia through a third country at the end of 2022 and began cooperating with Russian special services in exchange for Russian citizenship, the SBU reports.

To prove his loyalty, the man immediately provided information about the alleged location of Ukrainian defenses around Kyiv, which Russia used for a major attack a few days later.

The alleged spy was then allegedly trained by the FSB in Moscow and sent back to Ukraine to gather intelligence on military facilities in Kyiv and Zhytomyr region.

SBU officers detained the suspect in his apartment in Kyiv. As a result of the searches, a phone for communication with the FSB, Russian symbols and documents necessary for registration of Russian citizenship were found, the SBU also reported.

Now the suspect faces life imprisonment.
