White House Budget Director Shalanda Young warned Monday in a letter to Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson and other congressional leaders that the United States is running out of time and money to help Ukraine, which is fighting a war with Russia, Reuters reports.
In October, President Joe Biden’s administration asked Congress for nearly $106 billion in funding for ambitious border security plans for Ukraine, Israel, and the United States.
Republicans control the House of Representatives by a slim majority, and funding for Ukraine has become politically controversial for some right-wing lawmakers.
In a letter published by the White House, Young said that cutting off funding and arms to Ukraine would increase the likelihood of Russian victories.
“I want to be clear: without action from Congress, by the end of the year we will run out of resources to purchase additional weapons and equipment for Ukraine and to provide equipment from the US military arsenal,” Young wrote.
“There is no magic pot of funds to deal with this moment. I’ve run out of money – and almost no time.”
The United States is the largest donor of military aid to Ukraine with a total of $44.2 billion since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, according to AFP.
The latest military aid to Ukraine from the United States, worth $100 million, was announced two weeks ago and includes air defense, AFP reports.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyi announced a new package of US military aid after a meeting with Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin, who made an unannounced visit to Kyiv.
