The Kremlin said on Monday that an article in The Washington Post newspaper that a Ukrainian army officer coordinated an attack on Russia’s Nord Stream gas pipeline is particularly troubling, given that the publication’s sources also claim that the president of Ukraine knew nothing about the operation. Reuters reports, citing Reuters. from News.ro.
No one claimed responsibility for the September 2022 explosions off the Danish island of Bornholm that damaged three of the system’s four pipelines that deliver Russian gas to Europe.
The Washington Post reported that the coordinator of the attack was a high-ranking Ukrainian military officer, Roman Chervinskyi, who has deep ties to Ukrainian intelligence services. The publication also quotes unknown people who knew about the operation and stated that President Volodymyr Zelenskyi was not allowed to participate in the operation. Chervinsky received orders from high-ranking Ukrainian officials who ultimately reported to Commander-in-Chief General Valery Zaluzhny, writes The Washington Post.
“Traces of Ukraine in this sabotage, in this terrorist act are increasingly appearing in reports, investigations and mass media reports,” Kremlin press secretary Dmytro Peskov commented on Monday. “This article talks about the fact that President Zelenskyi could not know about such actions of his subordinates in the security forces. This is a very alarming signal not only for us, but also for the countries of the collective West,” Peskov noted. “If the Kyiv regime is no longer in control of the situation in its own country, then this is alarming, and this should also be taken into account,” he added.
A sudden drop in pressure in pipelines under the Baltic Sea was recorded on September 26, 2022, and seismologists recorded explosions, sparking a wave of speculation about who sabotaged the multibillion-dollar project to transport Russian gas to Germany. Some US and European officials initially suggested without evidence that Russia blew up its own pipelines, a claim President Vladimir Putin dismissed as “idiocy”. Russia has repeatedly claimed, without providing evidence, that the West was behind the Nord Stream explosions – particularly the United States and Great Britain, which both deny involvement.
The New York Times and The Washington Post reported that Ukraine, which has repeatedly denied involvement, was behind the attack. Investigative journalist Seymour Hersh reported that divers of the US Navy destroyed the pipelines, Washington denies the information. In a blog post, Hersh said the plan was developed in 2021 at the highest level in the United States. The White House said the article was “completely false and completely fabricated.”
