Russia has begun recruiting women to perform combat tasks in the war against Ukraine, the dpa agency reported on Tuesday. The web portal Important Stories, which claims to be one of the few Russian sources of independent investigative journalism, reported on Monday that female snipers and female drone operators have begun to be recruited into a mercenary unit under the command of the Russian Ministry of Defense. .

Female servicemen are offered a six-month contract with a monthly salary of about 220,000 rubles ($2,330). In case of injury, they are paid a bonus of 1 to 3 million rubles, and in case of death, the descendants are paid about 5 million rubles.

Job postings are posted on the Russian social network VKontakte. One of the recruiters told Important Stories that they are looking for women who have already been trained in the handling of weapons. During the month, newcomers will be taught how to handle weapons.

Russia has been waging war against neighboring Ukraine for more than 20 months. The number of casualties on both sides is estimated to be very high.

The British Ministry of Defense estimates that between 240,000 and 290,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded since Moscow invaded. This figure includes between 150,000 and 190,000 people who died or were incapacitated.
