Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said on Friday that Russia will try to “destroy” his country’s electricity system this winter, as it did last year when it stepped up its massive bombing of key infrastructure, AFP and Agerpres reported.

“This winter, Russian terrorists will try again to destroy our electricity industry,” Zelensky said in a daily address on social media, adding that Ukrainian officials “are fully aware of the danger.”

He added that the Ukrainians are preparing for “the protection of facilities for the production and supply of electric and thermal energy, the restoration of everything that was damaged by the attacks.”

“It is very important to win this winter, overcome all difficulties and ensure the protection of our people,” Zelensky emphasized.

Last winter was marked by a campaign of Russian bombing of Ukrainian infrastructure, millions of people were forced to sit in the cold and darkness.

Zelenskyi said on Thursday that he had received “clear consent” from the Europeans to receive new anti-aircraft systems, as Kyiv had been demanding for months.
