The missile that killed two civilians in the Polish village of Przewodow near the border with Ukraine in November 2022 was Ukrainian, not Russian, Polish Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro confirmed on Thursday, AFP reports citing Agerpres.
The unfortunate explosion at a grain drying plant near the school, about six kilometers from the border with Ukraine, came as Russia launched massive strikes on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure across the country.
“The investigation conducted by the Polish prosecutor’s office led to the unequivocal opinion that this missile was Ukrainian,” Zbigniew Ziobro, who also serves as Poland’s attorney general, said on Thursday.
“Considering where it was fired from and by which military unit, it was a Ukrainian missile,” he said, indicating that it was a “Soviet, Russian-made” projectile.
At the same time, Ziobro expressed regret that he “has not been cooperating with Kyiv on this issue for months.”
The far-right Polish party wants “reparations” from Ukraine
The rocket landing on the Polish village briefly raised fears that NATO would be drawn into the conflict and that there would be a serious escalation of the war in Ukraine, as Poland is protected by NATO’s collective defense obligations.
After a period of doubt about the origin and risks of escalation, Warsaw finally recognized it as “highly likely” that it was an “unfortunate accident” of a Ukrainian projectile.
Ziobro did not name those responsible for the incident.
On the other hand, the far-right Polish party Konfederacja, anti-European and anti-Ukrainian, demanded “reparations” from Kyiv two weeks before the general elections in Poland, where this group can count on the support of approximately 10% of the electorate.
