The Bulgarian government has agreed to temporarily stop importing sunflower seeds from Ukraine after protests by farmers, Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov said on Wednesday, assuring that he would support the production of local farmers, DPA and Agerpres reported.
Ilya Prodanov, a representative of the farmers who started the protests on Monday, confirmed to the bTV television station that an agreement had been reached with the Sofia executive on Tuesday evening.
Seed imports from Ukraine will be suspended until the countries reach an agreement on the respective import quotas.
Grain producers in Bulgaria are also asking for a ban on the import of wheat, corn and rapeseed from Ukraine, as they fear unfair competition from Ukraine.
Agreements between Bulgaria and Ukraine will have to wait until the end of the scheduled meeting on agriculture between the European Commission and Ukraine.
