Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that his country’s allies have eased sanctions against Russia and called for a new campaign to apply new punitive measures against Moscow, Sky News reports.
“Right now we are seeing too long a pause from our partners on sanctions,” he said in a video message overnight. “And Russia’s very active attempts to circumvent sanctions.”
Zelensky added that his government’s priorities are sanctions against Russia’s energy sector, attempts to stop the flow of electronics to Russia, and further blocking of the Russian financial sector.
“The global onslaught of sanctions must resume,” he said.
Earlier, the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oleg Nikolenko, said that Ukraine rejected any proposals to ease sanctions against Russia as part of efforts to restore the UN-signed agreement on the transportation of grain through the Black Sea.
“Easing part of the sanctions regime against Russia in exchange for the restoration of the grain agreement would be a victory for Russian food blackmail and an invitation to Moscow for new waves of blackmail,” Nikolenko wrote on Facebook.
Before the outbreak of the latest Ukrainian crisis, Western allies warned Russia that any violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty would have significant economic consequences.
