Analysts of GeoConfirmed, which geolocates images related to the war in Ukraine, claim that a Russian drone fell on the territory of our country on Monday, which confirms Ukraine’s information, while Romanian officials categorically deny it.

Russian drones struck IzmailPhoto: shot from Twitter

Volunteers with GeoConfirmed say they have identified a spot in Romania where a Russian drone likely went down during a Russian attack on Monday.

GeoConfirmed published several photos that it analyzed to conclude that the drone arrived on the territory of our country after Russia attacked the port of Izmail on the Ukrainian side of the Danube.

The investigation was based on the testimony of several witnesses, a video recording of the moment of the drone explosion, and an analysis of the terrain in the area.

“Estimated crash zone = Romanian river bank, area around 45.328864, 28.803601,” according to GeoConfirmed, referring to the latitude and longitude of where the kamikaze drone would have crashed, an agricultural area on the Romanian bank of the Danube.

The village of Plauru is less than one and a half kilometers from this place.

“It is likely that the Shahed drone crashed and exploded in Romania, probably after being hit by Ukrainian air defense,” GeoConfirmed reported.

Romania categorically rejects this scenario

President Klaus Iohannis said on Tuesday that “no drone or any other part of any device” had reached Romania after Monday’s Russian attack on Ukrainian ports on the Danube. According to him, even on Tuesday, the attacks took place 800 meters from the Romanian border.

“There were no parts, no drone, no other parts of any device to Romania. We have complete control over our national space. I have checked absolutely everything and can reassure the public. Nothing reached Romania. But yes, we are concerned because these attacks are taking place at a very short distance from the Romanian border,” President Klaus Iohannis said on Tuesday.

The head of state also said that he was informed about such attacks and that one of them was carried out today, it happened 800 meters from the border with Romania:

“Today we had attacks that were verified 800 meters from our border. So very, very close. But we are ready, we are ready, and we are very well protected in NATO. I can say what I said before: Romania benefits from extremely strong security guarantees, the strongest in our history.”

“I know exactly who, when and what to do if something falls on NATO land”

When asked what Romania would do in a situation where a drone of the war launched by Russia falls in Ukraine, if the 5th article and the battalion located in Cinque can be activated to participate in combat operations, Iohannis said that he knows exactly who, when and what to do if something falls on NATO land.

“At the last NATO summit, we took some concrete decisions, and I know exactly who, when and what should be done if something falls on NATO territory, if some event occurs, if the scale of the event exceeds the very clear things. As stated in our procedures, everyone knows very clearly when and how to do it,” said Johannis.

He also noted that there is a scenario and a plan for every possible incident, stressing that such information is not public: “It is obvious, it does not mean that we want something like this to happen. We do not want these incidents to happen on NATO territory, which in this case is Romania.”

“We have evidence. It’s useless to deny”

Kyiv said on Monday that Russian drones crashed and exploded on Romanian territory during an attack on Monday morning in the Danube region. Defense and foreign ministers in Bucharest denied the information, but Ukraine insisted, saying it had “photographic evidence”.

“According to the State Border Service of Ukraine, yesterday evening during a massive attack by Russia in the area of the Izmail port on the territory of Romania, a Russian Shahed (drones) fell and exploded,” wrote the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleg. Nikolenko.

However, the Ministry of National Defense from Bucharest “categorically” denied the information.

And the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania Luminica Odobescu denied that Russian drones hit the territory of Romania.

  • After the night attack on the Ukrainian port on the Danube, the territory of Romania was not affected by drones or drone debris.
  • Of course, there is a risk because what happened there is very close to our borders,” said Luminica Odobescu, who was on a visit to Berlin, writes The Guardian.
  • “We have seen how Russia cynically continues to attack civilian infrastructure, preventing Ukraine from exporting grain. Of course, there is a risk of accidents or incidents, but so far there have been none,” the Romanian official added.

However, Kyiv insisted, and Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said after a press conference in Kyiv that Ukraine has photo evidence that Russian drones hit Romanian territory during a night airstrike.

“I think that in this particular case they (the Romanian authorities – no) are currently studying all aspects of what happened. There is no point in denying that something fell there. And we authoritatively, with evidence, declare that “Shaheda” drones flew there. We have photo evidence that something fell there,” Kuleba said, Ukrinform reports.

He also noted that “there is a tendency to try not to exacerbate the interpretation of certain events by partners in order not to be involved in a direct conflict.”

“We have photo evidence. We are ready to share them, but the final conclusions will be made by the Romanian authorities, who will not only have to draw conclusions, but also say what they will do with them. It is easier to draw conclusions than to do something about them. That is why we have such a cautious reaction,” said the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
