A Russian-appointed official acknowledged that Moscow troops had left the Ukrainian village of Robotyne more than a week after Kyiv announced their return, Reuters reported.

Evgeny Balytskyi, an official appointed by Moscow in the Zaporizhzhia region, stated in a television interview that the Russian army retreated for tactical reasons.

“The Russian military left – tactically left – this settlement, because staying on the bare surface, when there is no way to fully dig in… makes no sense at all. That’s why the Russian army retreated to the mountains,” RBC quoted an official as saying.

Previously, Russia did not recognize the loss of Robotîne, whose return Ukraine announced on August 28. In its daily report on Tuesday, the Russian Defense Ministry said its forces had repelled two Ukrainian attacks near Robotyn.

More than 18 months after the Russian invasion, Ukraine says it has gained ground and breached Russia’s first line of fortifications at several front-line locations, despite Moscow’s repeated claims that the three-month-old Ukrainian counteroffensive is a failure.
