In September, the UN International Court of Justice (IC) will hear Russia’s objections within the framework of the procedure initiated by Ukraine after the beginning of the Russian invasion of the territory of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
Ukraine, which appealed to the UN’s top court shortly after the start of the offensive by Russian troops, accuses Russia of misusing allegations of genocide in eastern Ukraine to justify its invasion and that Russia itself planned the genocide, AFP and Agerpres reported.
In March 2022, judges of the IC ordered Russia to urgently suspend military operations that are still ongoing in Ukraine.
“The UN International Court of Justice (ICJ) will hold public hearings on the preliminary objections raised by the Russian Federation,” the ICJ, based in The Hague, said in a statement.
On Monday, September 18, Russia will present its objections, and the next day Ukraine will develop its arguments.
One more day, on Wednesday, 32 countries, all Western allies of Ukraine, will be able to intervene.
In June, the International Court of Justice authorized 32 countries to intervene on the side of Ukraine in this case. However, the IC rejected the US request.
Allied intervention in this case will focus mainly on the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice. A jurisdictional decision can take months or even years.
The arguments will be repeated on September 25 and 27.
Kyiv accused Russia of invoking the UN convention on genocide when it said at the start of the war that it had invaded Ukraine to end what Moscow called genocide in pro-Russian regions of eastern Ukraine.
Moscow previously rejected the hearing, saying in a written statement that the International Court of Justice had no jurisdiction over the case because Kyiv’s request was not covered by the 1994 Genocide Convention.
The International Court of Justice’s order asking Russia to stop the offensive was only a preliminary ruling pending a decision to determine whether it falls under its jurisdiction.
The International Court of Justice was created after World War II to resolve disputes between UN member states. Its decisions are binding, but it does not have the means to implement them.
