Russia’s Defense Ministry on Wednesday published a new tally of casualties it says its forces have inflicted on Ukraine since the start of a “special military operation” last year, The Guardian reports.
The Ministry of Defense in Moscow claims that since February 24 last year, the Ukrainian armed forces have lost:
- 458 aircraft;
- 245 helicopters;
- 5,600 drones;
- 428 air defense systems;
- 11,204 tanks and other combat vehicles;
- 1144 rocket salvo systems;
- 5819 field guns and mortars;
- 12,155 special military vehicles.
Most of the figures are significantly higher than what Ukraine had before the war, and remain unrealistic, even if the equipment received by the Ukrainian military from Western partners after the start of the war is included.
For example, the independent site Oryx, which monitors the losses of both armies fighting in Ukraine, counted 604 tanks, 305 BMPs, 319 armored personnel carriers, 50 rocket launchers and 119 “air-to-surface” lost by the Ukrainians. missile systems.
Even if the real number of Ukrainian losses is probably much higher, taking into account only the losses confirmed by open sources, the figures given by the ministry headed by Sergei Shoigu are unclear, so the journalists of The Guardian ironically note that these data are for “internal consumption” in Russia.
