According to the independent website Oryx, which monitors losses on both sides of the war in Ukraine, the Ukrainian army has so far lost at least 10 Leopard 2 tanks out of the total number it received from its Western partners.
According to the balance prepared by Oryx, the Ukrainians would have lost 4 Leopard 2A4 tanks, of which one was destroyed and 3 damaged, and 6 Leopard 2A6 tanks, of which two were destroyed, 3 were damaged and one was damaged and abandoned.
As a rule, the real number of military equipment lost by the Ukrainian or Russian military may be much higher, given that the Oryx balance sheet records only losses confirmed by photos, videos or other open sources.
But taking into account the fact that Russian propaganda made the destruction of Leopard tanks a matter of pride, repeatedly broadcasting recordings of such hits, in this case the figure in the balance sheet compiled by Oryx is probably quite close to the real one.
Ukraine is believed to have received about 40 Leopard 2A4 tanks and another 21 2A6 models.
Ukraine received Leopard 2 tanks, its predecessor is also expected
It will be recalled that Germany officially approved the shipment of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine on January 25, announcing then that it would deliver 14 tanks of this type to Kyiv.
At the same time, the government headed by Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that it would authorize all supplies to Ukraine that NATO partners wanted.
The Scholz government later approved the delivery of Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine in early February, but it is unclear how many of the models the Ukrainian army has already received, given that many of these units are in need of repair and modernization.
It appears that they are not yet playing an active role in the Ukrainian offensive that began last month.
Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Oleksiy Makeev, said at the end of May that Ukraine would “soon” receive 110 Leopard 1 tanks.
