Ukraine’s Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko announced his resignation on Friday morning over a “misunderstanding” over the use of state funds for cultural projects as Kyiv struggles to resist a Russian invasion, AFP reported.

“I submitted my resignation to the Prime Minister (on Thursday) evening due to a number of misunderstandings regarding the importance of culture in wartime,” Oleksandr Tkachenko wrote in Telegram.

“In wartime, private and public funds for culture are no less important than for drones, because culture is the shield of our identity and our borders,” he added, without elaborating on the reason for his resignation.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi on Thursday evening demanded the replacement of the minister, criticizing the use of the state budget for cultural projects at the expense of defense.

“In such times of war, the maximum attention of the state, and therefore the resources of the state, should be devoted to defense,” Zelenskyy said in his daily speech.

“Museums, cultural centers, symbolism, TV series – all this is important, but now there are other priorities. Find extra-budgetary funds. Not state funds,” he added, noting that he asked Prime Minister Denys Smogol to replace Minister Tkatchenko.

The publication “Ukrainian Pravda” reported on Thursday that the Ministry of Culture decided to allocate 448 million hryvnias (almost 11 million euros) for the production of TV series.
