Fighting in eastern Ukraine has “intensified to some extent” as Ukrainian and Russian forces clashed in at least three areas of the eastern front, a senior Ukrainian defense official said on Sunday.
Last month, Kyiv launched a long-awaited counteroffensive to retake Russian-held territory, making gradual gains in parts of the east and south.
Deputy Minister of Defense Hanna Malyar reported in Telegram that Russian forces have been attacking in the direction of Kupyansk, Kharkiv Region for two days.
“We are on the defensive,” she wrote. “Fierce battles are going on, the positions of both sides change dynamically several times a day,” she explained.
Malyar also said the two armies are clashing around the destroyed city of Bakhmut, but Ukrainian forces are “gradually advancing” along its southern flank.
She added that Kyiv troops are also repelling Russian attacks near Avdiivka and Maryinka.
